“Over the music, there is a spoken word element with a structure I can only describe as (no shade) Nathan Joe-core. In his dramaturgical role, I wasn’t sure what hand he would play in shaping the work, especially with a practice famed for expression

“As a debut solo work, Body Story showcases Xin JI’s boldness as bot ha performer and a storyteller. It is a fearless exploration of the human body in all its complexities—fragile, resilient, evolving, and undefined.” Blackguard Media Reviews

“Xin Ji’s performance is thrilling, enlivening, and difficult to look away from (although there’s plenty else gorgeous to look at onstage).” Sam Brooks, Critical Corner

Body Story

Auckland Pride 2025: Tētahi Ki Tētahi | Pride Elevates
Performed and Choreographed by Xin Ji w/ Alistair Deverick
Produced by Rosabel Tan

When was the last time your body felt happy? When did it feel the most tense? How many injuries has your body sustained? Under what circumstances have you pushed it to its limits?

The successful body. The authoritarian body. The sweaty body. The becoming body. The complete body. The eternal body. The digital body. The ancestral body. The hidden body.

What does your body remember?

In this debut solo work by dance artist Xin Ji, the story of his body unravels through moments where the emotional and physical collide. Uncertainty, recklessness and euphoria slide into an intimate personal narrative — offering ways to consider our bodies as vehicles for resistance and alchemy.

The seeds of my collaboration with Xin began back in 2024 when I interviewed him about his journey as a dancer for Satellites, a digital Asian arts magazine and archive.

In his dramaturgical role, I wasn’t sure what hand he would play in shaping the work, especially with a practice famed for expression of movement without speaking. Now here it is, in a word association type of text.”
