Using three poems, Nathan Joe explores the form of autobiography through performance poetry. A meditation that explores the vast lived experience between Christchurch and Auckland, between queerness and being Chinese-Kiwi. Where nostalgia intersects with hope to reveal a concise history of a whole self.

SIK FAN LAH! is a six-part culinary adventure and exploration of modern Kiwi-Chinese life across Aotearoa New Zealand. I featured as the guest host in episode 6, set in my hometown Ōtautahi Christchurch.

The entire series is available for viewing over on TVNZ+ (New Zealand only).

Editing

Some examples of my work as an editor for various publications above, including the Playmarket Annual (available online), eel mag (online) and Rat World (print only).

Writing

Over at Satellites, as part of their online archive and magazine, I’ve been contributing as a writer and archivist. Check out my pieces, including an interview with dancer Xin Ji and a mapping of Asian Aotearoa theatre history/canon.

The ‘Introduction’ scene from Scenes from a Yellow Peril is published online at Starling Magazine. You can also purchase a copy of the published script/zine from the 2022 Production of Scenes from a Yellow Peril through Chroma or The Open Book.

For writing on queer performance, I have contributed a preliminary manifesto (‘Seven Gestures Towards a New Queer Performance in Aotearoa’) to BLOT, as well as co-writing an essay (‘A Rainbow in the Age of Covid: Contemporary Queer Theatre in Aotearoa) for the Australian Drama Studies journal with James Wenley.

Other writing I’ve done over at The Pantograph Punch is also available to read online, including an essay on some of my influences, as well as theatre-related writings.
